The song was released as the first single from The Killers' third studio album "Day & Age" on September 22, 2008. Brandon Flowers described "Human" as "Johnny Cash meets Pet Shop Boys". There was confusion over the line "Are we human, or are we dancer?" in the song's chorus due to its grammar. I was aching over those lyrics for a very long time to get them right.

This was the first song The Killers recorded for their Day & Age album, in fact it was recorded during their 2007 Sawdust sessions. Stuart Price, who worked with The Killers on several Sawdust tracks produced this. Price is best known for co-writing and producing Madonna's Confessions on a Dance Floor.
