Something Corporate (also known as SoCo) was an American rock band from Orange County, California, formed in 1998. Their last line-up included vocalist and pianist Andrew McMahon, guitarists Josh Partington and Bobby Anderson, bassist Kevin Page and drummer Brian Ireland.

North is the third and final studio album by American rock band Something Corporate. Near the beginning of the writing process for the album, vocalist and pianist Andrew McMahon and guitarist Josh Partington wanted it to "sound like a winter album", in contrast to their debut album Leaving Through the Window (2002) which they viewed as a "summer album". After losing focus through constant touring, the group decided to record an album in Seattle, Washington. Following North's announcement in July 2003, the band went on tour supporting 311 and Good Charlotte. Preceded by the single "Space" in September, the album was released on October 21 through Geffen and Drive-Thru Records. The band subsequently went on a headlining United States tour from October to December. In January 2004, "Ruthless" was released as the second single.

There's some filler here, of course - probably more than the band's debut, which only seemed to lose steam toward the end of its 14-song track list - but North still proved that Something Corporate had the maturity to move past the majority of their Warped Tour brethren. Unfortunately, rhythm guitarist William Tell quit during the album's supporting tour, and Something Corporate took an extended (perhaps permanent) break several months later.

North (Something Corporate album). 2003 studio album by Something Corporate. Background and writing. After finalizing their lineup, Something Corporate began performing at local venues, eventually gaining support slots for groups such as Better Than Ezra and Sugar Ray. Shortly afterwards, the band signed to independent label Drive-Thru Records. Drive-Thru had a distribution deal with major label MCA Records, which allowed the latter to upstream bands from the former. The band's debut album Leaving Through the Window, released in early 2002, was a joint release between both record labels. While on tour, McMahon began. The album includes an enhanced CD portion with video footage from the recording process as well as a bonus video for the single "Space Contents.

Something Corporate had the misfortune of being dubbed an emo band throughout their career, a classification that overlooked the group's pop/rock muscle and Andrew McMahon's strong songwriting. While Leaving Through the Back Window introduced McMahon as a younger generation's Ben Folds (albeit with more angst and less snarky humor), North saw the songwriter taking an introspective turn, shunning the drunk high school girls and classroom bullies of his previous album for thoughtful ruminations on love, celebrity, and the steady approach of adulthood. There's some filler here, of course - probably more than the band's debut, which only seemed to lose steam toward the end of its 14-song track list - but North still proved that Something Corporate had the maturity to move past the majority of their Warped Tour brethren.
