DJ Koze - Reincarnations DJ Koze has forged a reputation as a dance music Renaissance darling. Besides his work as DJ Koze, Stefan Kozalla has kept himself busy under his electronica alias Adolf Noise and with wry funk posse International Pony. But even with 2005's excellent Kosi Comes Around and a series of consistently inventive singles like "All the Time" and "I Want to Sleep"-RA's number one track of last year-Kozalla's perhaps most appreciated for his playful, oft superior takes on the music of other artists. The album's sequenced expertly, attentive to its own pace and cohesion, with a few points of breath, moments designed to sit and stretch again astride the steamier cuts. Wechsel Garland's "Swim," for instance, becomes a folky, open-field pastiche that Harry Nilsson might have admired, and Koze's Broken CD mix of Garland's "Mutes" later cuts the lights for a span of minimalist ambience. DJ Koze's second remix collection showcases his ability to take some small portion or impulse within a song and create an entirely new context for it. Usually, the new context brings out a quality or shade in the music only hinted at by the original. In Koze’s hands, it becomes a starlit torch song in some Palm Springs lounge; the androids still melancholy but now played for their sex appeal, too. Or Herbert’s "You Saw It All", which appears here as a Motown-style love letter that breaks into a clarinet solo played by someone who may not have ever played a clarinet before.
