Her neighbors would rarely see her. But, when she had a love interest, a gay construction worker named Homer Barron, the two of them would be spotted together on Sunday afternoons. The townspeople were happy for her and thought she would get married to Homer, especially when they found out she bought some men’s things. However, after sometime, when they did not see Homer anymore, they pitied Miss Emily again because her lover left her. She was rumored to kill herself when she bought rat poison.

They rose when she entered-a small, fat woman in black, with a thin gold chain descending to her waist and vanishing into her belt, leaning on an ebony cane with a tarnished gold head. None of the young men were quite good enough for Miss Emily and such. We had long thought of them as a tableau, Miss Emily a slender figure in white in the background, her father a spraddled silhouette in the foreground, his back to her and clutching a horsewhip, the two of them framed by the back-flung front door. The body had apparently once lain in the attitude of an embrace, but now the long sleep that outlasts love, that conquers even the grimace of love, had cuckolded him.

The red rose whispers of passion, And the white rose breathes of love; O, the red rose is a falcon, And the white rose is a dove. A rose must remain with the sun and the rain or its lovely promise won't come true. One rose is enough for the dawn. I'd rather have roses on my table than diamonds on my neck. Gather the rose of love whilst yet is time. If I had a rose for every time I thought of you, I'd be picking roses for a lifetime. The Rose is without an explanation; She blooms, because She blooms. A rose dreams of enjoying the company of bees, but none appears. The sun asks: Aren't you tired of waiting Yes, answers the rose, but if I close my petals, I will wither and die. Paulo Coelho. There is simply the rose; it is perfect in every moment of its existence.

Reading William Faulkner's short stories is an excellent way to approach his major works. Although his novels are better known and more widely read than his short stories, the same settings and many of the same characters and ideas found in them are introduced in his stories. Faulkner's most famous, most popular, and most anthologized short story, "A Rose for Emily" evokes the terms Southern gothic and grotesque, two types of literature in which the general tone is one of gloom, terror, and understated violence. Because the Griersons "held themselves a little too high for what they really were," Miss Emily's father forbids her to date socially, or at least the community thinks so: "None of the young men were quite good enough for Miss Emily and such. She becomes so terribly desperate for human love that she murders Homer and clings to his dead body.

Taken from his Selected Short Stories collection the story is narrated in the first person by an unnamed narrator and from the beginning of the story the reader realises that Faulkner may be exploring the theme of tradition and change. Also the curtains and lamp shade in the bedroom where Homer lies are described as being rose coloured. It is possible that Miss Emily was once open to or in love. Other symbolism in the story may include the mail box that Miss Emily refuses to allow outside the house.
