Régine Crespin was unquestionably one of the great sopranos of the twentieth century, although her career was marked by periods of struggle with her instrument. EMI's The Very Best of Régine Crespin is concentrated in the years 1958-1961, when Crespin enjoyed her first bloom of international fame, and in 1965, when she was locked into her first vocal crisis, something that would be apparent in her San Francisco debut the following year.

Born in Marseille in 1927, Régine Crespin finally succumbed to illness on July. In spite of her fondness for the stage and great roles, she doesn't neglect the repertoire of melody and lied, to which she dedicates a great deal of her activities after being appointed as a teacher at the Conservatoire de Paris in 1976. But before that, she already dedicated the warm tone of her voice and her wonderful diction to Le Paon by Ravel which she sings in 1972 accompanied by Janine Reiss then two lieder by Schumann and Schubert, this time with Christian Ivaldi

Early life and education: 1927–1950. Crespin was born in Marseille in 1927. She moved to Nîmes with her family at the age of five and her parents opened a large shoe store in that city which they ran for many years. Crespin's childhood was not an easy one, being affected both by growing up during World War II and her mother's alcoholism. She initially intended to be a pharmacist but was prevented in pursuing this path after failing to pass her Baccalauréat at the age of 16. Up to this point her father had not allowed her to study. Ingram was noticed by the wife of the famed voice teacher Modesti, who invited him to France, for further study. Under Modesti's guidance, and with the help of his assistant, Simone Féjart, he acquired considerable refinement, both vocal and musical.

Crespin evokes the secretive intimacy, dream-drugged passion and ice-bound rigidity of Debussy's Songs of Bilitis. In the Poulenc songs, the contrast between the almost tear-choked mournfulness and the frolicking humor is riveting. I only heard the last great French dramatic soprano when she had already graduated to character mezzo parts: as the old, dying Prioress, Mme de Croissy in Poulenc’s Dialogues des Carmelites at Covent Garden in the 1980s. Crespin had been the composer’s chosen singer for the role of the new Prioress, Mme Lidoine, in the Paris premiere of his opera in 1958, and the recording made at the time sets the standard for that role and the entire opera.
