The Trout Quintet (Forellenquintett) is the popular name for the Piano Quintet in A major, D. 667, by Franz Schubert. The piano quintet was composed in 1819, when he was 22 years old; it was not published, however, until 1829, a year after his death. Rather than the usual piano quintet lineup of piano and string quartet, the Trout Quintet is written for piano, violin, viola, cello and double bass

Album including Album cover Booklet (PDF). This quartet is one of the fruits of that period. In the first movement, Schubert develops a simple descending-scale motif into an intense outpouring of grief. The quartet takes its name from the theme of the second movement, a song which Schubert wrote when he was twenty. In its quartet incarnation, Schubert takes the simple melody through a whole range of moods, building to an impassioned frenzy and then relaxing. In the 1975 DG recording of the Trout there is a masterly contribution from Gilels, and the Amadeus play with considerable freshness. The unanimity of ensemble is remarkable.

Schubert Trout Quintet, Death and the Maiden Quartet. The pairing of Schubert's most popular chamber music is an obvious and logical choice. This one is no exception, but deserves to be heard for Limpany's "Trout".
