Wave of Mutilation: Best of Pixies is a compilation album by the Pixies. It was released on May 3, 2004 in the United Kingdom and the following day in the United States alongside a companion DVD featuring a live show, promotional videos and two documentaries. Early batches of the record feature a fault on the track "Hey", where Black Francis' opening shout of "Hey" is missing.

4AD tries, tries again with Wave of Mutilation: The Best of the Pixies, the second Pixies best-of they've released since the band broke up in 1992 and the companion piece to the long-awaited, simultaneously released DVD Pixies. Come On Pilgrim's "I've Been Tired" and "Levitate Me" are missed nearly as much, even though including them would bring the total songs from the eight-song mini-album that appear on Wave of Mutilation to five (making a case for Come On Pilgrim to be considered the Pixies' most consistent - if not best - work).

Live: Malibu Nightclub, Lido Beach, NY, 31 July '89 (Remastered).

2004 marked the release of Wave of Mutilation, a best of collection presenting 23 tracks that outline the Pixies catalogue, giving new listeners an excellent feel for one of rocks most underrated bands. With outlandish lyrics and interesting song orchestration, the Pixies may be a bit hard to swallow at first, however, after repeated listens, the intricacies and creativity prove to present themself in an admirable light

Pixies fans will surely welcome 'Wave of Mutilation', the new Best Of album, as a pleasant bonus to their collection despite it being a release they could probably have lived without. The recent 'Death to the Pixies' did a thorough job of highlighting the band's best album (and live) moments, while the release of 'Complete B-Sides' should have provided enough obscure recordings for the average Pixies devotee. For many, the middle third will be where the album really hits its stride, as it runs the majestic gauntlet of 1989's polished 'Doolittle', the Pixies' supreme synthesis of melody and attitude. Hey' sets the tone for the album's style - triumphant melody punctuated by abrasive lyrics, overlaid with an echoing staccato chorus. Monkey Gone to Heaven' exults in smoothness, with its crisp and simple signature bassline and Black Francis's (for once) practically silken voice.
