Calypsonians pushed the boundaries of free speech as their lyrics spread news of any topic relevant to island life, including speaking out against political corruption. Eventually British rule enforced censorship and police began to scan these songs for damaging content. He made his home there along with Wilmoth Houdini, and became one of the great calypsonians of the USA. Early forms of calypso were also influenced by jazz such as Sans Humanitae.

Calypso is the third studio album by recording artist Harry Belafonte, released by RCA Victor (LPM-1248) in 1956. The album became his second consecutive number-one album on the Billboard Top Pop Albums chart, where it peaked for 31 weeks. Calypso is well-known as the first LP record album to sell over one million copies and is considered by many critics to be one of the greatest albums of all time.

Calypsonians have borne outlandish names like Attila the Hun, the Mighty Terror and Macbeth the Great.
