George Jones got his start on Starday, a small Texas label co-owned by record producer Papa Dailey. Dailey had discovered Jones in 1953 and signed the singer up the following year. At that point, Jones had been working the Texas circuit, but had yet to make it nationally. With a spot on the Louisiana Hayride radio broadcast and his first hit "Why Baby Why," though, Jones broke out and would go onto even greater fame with the Mercury, UA, and Epic record labels
Collection of Jones' early Starday recordings, first issued as SLP 101 in 1956. This is an early reissue, remastered with "the latest sound techniques" and issued in 1964. Yellow label with black print. Yearning" is described on the label as a "Duet with Jeanette Hicks. The label is yellow with black lettering, Starday in curved letters.
George Jones - "A Good Year For The Roses" You might mistake this lush Jones performance as one of his biggest hits on Epic after signing with the label in 1971. However, this proved to be his last major hit for Musicor Records, where he spent six successful years before teaming up with Billy Sherrill. The sound quality was not always the best at Musicor, but not on this one. Jones was in career-defining mode as he performed these lyrics about a couple who had taken the term going through the motions to a new high.

His voice has become iconic to country, as he inspired artists like Ricky Van Shelton, Alan Jackson, Vince Gill, Patty Loveless, and even other artists like Gram Parsons and Bob Dylan. George Jones' first releases were made in 1954, and then he was a 22-year old honky-tonk Hank Williams imitator who couldn't find his own image.
