With arranging genius Alan Wilder still one album away from fully joining the band, Frame became very much Gore's record, writing all the songs and exploring various styles never again touched upon in later years. Satellite" and "Monument" take distinct dub/reggae turns, while "Shouldn't Have Done That" delivers its slightly precious message about the dangers of adulthood with a spare arrangement and hollow, weirdly sweet vocals.

A BROKEN FRAME is such a beautifully understated album that it would be presumptuous to say that it is evocative of the 'Depeche Mode' sound. The album is so far removed from anything the band had done before or since that it almost defies categorization. It is difficult to criticize even the silly pieces (THE MEANING OF LOVE, A PHOTOGRAPH OF YOU) because even here there exists an underlying sincerity and charm that transcends lyrical concepts. The importance of this album with regards to the bands career is two fold. For one, FRAME is a complete album. A special note, in 1990 A BROKEN FRAME received an unique accolade. Not only is it a terrific album, but the cover photograph is also something to behold. The sickle-bearing laborer sandwiched between a sea of wheat and a vengeful looking sky is so well conceived that Life magazine dubbed it one of the best photographs of all time.
