Make It Happen is a 1967 album by Smokey Robinson & the Miracles. It featured ballads such as the hit singles "The Love I Saw in You Was Just a Mirage" and "More Love", as well as the up-tempo "The Tears of a Clown" co-written by Stevie Wonder and his producer Hank Cosby. Three years after the album's release, "The Tears of a Clown" was issued as a single, and charted at on both the Billboard Hot 100 and UK Singles Chart. As a result, Make It Happen was reissued as The Tears of a Clown in 1970.
In the UK, Smokey Robinson & the Miracles had a tough time finding an audience - "I Second That Emotion" made in 1967, and a re-release of "The Tracks Of My Tears" hit in 1969, but that was all they had for UK chart entries to that point. By 1970, their British distributor was so frustrated that he asked Karen Spreadbury, who was head of a Motown fan club in England, to pick a single from the Make It Happen album. She chose "The Tears of a Clown" - the last song on the album
The tears of a clown, when there's no one around Oh yeah baby. Now if I appear to be carefree It's only to camouflage my sadness And honey to shield my pride I try To cover this hurt with a show of gladness But don't let my show convince you That I've been happy since you Decided to go (Decided to go) Oh I need you so (I need you so). I'm hurt and I want you to know (Want you to know) But for others I put on a show (It's just a show) Ooh yeah. Now there's some sad things known to man But ain't too much sadder than.

Smokey Robinson And The Miracles – The Tears Of A Clown. HIT December 12, 1970. Smokey Robinson and his Miracles should’ve hit a full decade before they did. 1960’s Shop Around, an absolutely monstrous banger, was a million-seller, and it was the first major hit for Berry Gordy’s Motown company, which was only a year old at that point. Robinson didn’t stay retired for too long; he released his first solo album a year after he left the group. Robinson went on to have a great solo career, changing his sound with the times, pioneering the quiet storm subgenre, and landing a bunch of other hits. But he never got back to In a weird twist, the other Miracles did eventually score another without Smokey Robinson: the 1975 disco song Love Machine. But that’s a story for another day. GRADE: 9/10.
