Printed inner sleeve as well as a foldout sheet with lyrics and pictures.
Sting recruited jazz musicians from Miles Davis’s band, Art Blakey’s band, and Weather Report and made the album at Eddie Grant’s Barbados studio. The album title came to Sting in a dream he had his first night in Barbados. At the time, he called The Dream Of The Blue Turtles the most refined piece of work I’ve done. The Dream of the Blue Turtles Q&A. Featuring Darryl Jones. Producers Peter Smith & Sting. Writers Sergei Prokofiev & Sting. Bass Guitar Darryl Jones.
But except for Shadows, the bluesy Consider Me Gone and an instrumental, Blue Turtles, that grafts progressive 1960s jazz onto a Weather Reporty march, The Dream of the Blue Turtles is a pop record above all. It’s only a jam session between the lines, where Marsalis answers Sting’s voice with slyly ubiquitous fanfares and curlicues and epigrams. I’m all for political songs, and there’s no better vehicle for them than a megastar album. Yet Sting sabotages his own good intentions when he gets preachy or spacey or sanctimonious. If You Love Somebody Set Them Free is a postgrammatical, T-shirt sentiment and a denunciation of possessiveness that would be a lot more convincing issued by someone other than a millionaire.
Sting's The Dream of the Blue Turtles, his first solo album, is an interesting historical document. It reflects an uneasy period in British and world history, even as it marks an important transition point in Sting's own life and career. It's also a pretty good album that holds up well today, more than forty years later. By 1985, The Police were one of the most successful bands in the world
