Former Six Finger Satellite member John Maclean is now on Murphy's record label as The Juan MacLean. Murphy attended New York University, where he was an English major but later dropped out. At age 22, Murphy was offered a job writing for the sitcom Seinfeld which was then little-known DFA Records. The album is dedicated to Jerry Fuchs (1974–2009), who had performed drums live with the band on occasion as well as having a big part with other associated DFA acts. Murphy announced his retirement from LCD Soundsystem with the release of This Is Happening, and made his last television appearance under that name on February 14, 2011, on The Colbert Report.

Six Finger Satellite's first full-length album, The Pigeon Is the Most Popular Bird, was released in 1993, with Kurt Niemand replacing Dixon on bass. The record more accurately represented the band's vision of noisy, cyborg-esque post-punk, and was recorded by Bob Weston, whose band Shellac named their 1994 single, The Bird is the Most Popular Finger in tribute. Their 7" single supposedly recorded "live at the .

Six Finger Satellite's final opus (and it is an opus) sees them taking their willfully abrasive terrorism to its logical end by extending their short jabs of no-holds-barred noise rock into space rock territory. Along the way, the band further hones some of the riff-based guitar skronk featured on Severe Exposure and Paranormalized, trying their hands at guitar-less sci-fi creepiness, picking up flashes of dub, and - what's left? - oh yeah, Krautrock
