Far from the Madding Crowd (1874) is Thomas Hardy's fourth novel and his first major literary success. It originally appeared anonymously as a monthly serial in Cornhill Magazine, where it gained a wide readership. The novel is the first to be set in Thomas Hardy's Wessex in rural southwest England. It deals in themes of love, honour and betrayal, against a backdrop of the seemingly idyllic, but often harsh, realities of a farming community in Victorian England.

Whatever the case is, Wuthering Heights' Far from the Madding Crowd will probably not appeal to more than a select audience. Wuthering Heights is a fairly new band in my metal catalog. The 2002 sophomore album from these Danish folk-prog-power metallers, TO TRAVEL FOR EVERMORE really caught my ear when I finally got to hear it several months back. Impressed by that second effort, I quickly acquired the band’s third and newest release FAR FROM THE MADDING CROWD. Gather Ye Wild, my friends; the bagpipes and folky guitar lead carry the album forward into The Road Goes Ever On.

A very subtle Celtic influence abounds the songs throughout the entire album with a rather aggressive new vocalist: Nils Patrik Johansson. Former Tad Morose, Memento Mori and Fifth Reason singer Kristian Andren is gone and replaced with a more suitable frontman for the band's current musical ambitions. Wuthering Heights is guitarist Erik Ravn's band. Ravn not only composes all songs, but he also writes the lyrics. It's been this way since their debut Within (1999) and seems unlikely to change any time soon. While I still like their obscure debut Within the best, I think Far from the Madding Crowd has a more appealing value to power metal fans that look for something different. This is particularly recommended to fans of Skyclad, Symphony X, Blind Guardian and Falconer.

Nowhere in Dorset is that far from London, the furthest distance is about 155 miles, with the location of the book/film being about 130 miles. Set against lovely backdrops of the country side and telling a classic story, Far from the Madding Crowd is the best period drama I've seen since Pride and Prejudice. As a tale, FftMC's characters are as true and real as they ever are - whilst the gender story isn't as important as it might once be (although it's not entirely irrelevant no matter how much I'd like to hope it would be) and the politics of the era hopefully something of the past, this story still explores the plight.
