These were Cole's debut recordings. Originally recorded and released in sets of 78 . records between 1944–49, they were reissued in 1950 on 10-inch LPs. The original releases of Volume 3 (as 78 . record album) and Volume 4 (as 78 . m record album and as 45 . record box set) only contained 6 songs (3 records per set).

Music fans born after 1960 are less likely to be aware that Nat King Cole began his career as an influential jazz pianist, so much so that the great Art Tatum and the up-and-coming Oscar Peterson formed trios similar to Cole's. Unfortunately, this Mosaic box has been out of print since the mid-'90s, so it will typically fetch several times its original price when it pops up occasionally on auction lists.

Album · 1992 · 349 Songs. Jam-Bo (1993 Digital Remaster). The Nat "King" Cole Trio & Stan Kenton and His Orchestra. 20. Get To Gettin' (1993 Digital Remaster). 1. Paint Yourself a Rainbow (1993 Digital Remaster).

To me He is the father of trio jazz. Just the sound quality alone makes it worth the purchase. By the time these were made the original bassist, Wesley Prince, was replaced by Johnny Miller who is on all but one track. Also, the trio is augmented by a drummer on track 20. Nearly all of the tracks were recorded in Los Angeles, and all feature songs familiar to fans.

Nathaniel Adams Coles (March 17, 1919 – February 15, 1965), known professionally as Nat King Cole, was an American jazz pianist and vocalist. He recorded over one hundred songs that became hits on the pop charts. His trio was the model for small jazz ensembles that followed. Cole also acted in films and on television and performed on Broadway. He was the first African American man to host an American television series.
