Evita began as a rock opera concept album released in 1976 and Julie Covington was selected to sing the title role, including the vocals for this song. Released as a single, it topped the UK singles chart becoming at the time the biggest selling UK hit by a female vocalist with sales of 980,000 units. Prior to recording this song, Covington was best known for her role in the TV series Rock Follies. She was later given the opportunity to originate the role in the stage production of Evita, but declined, explaining that she thought the impact of her recording would be diminished.

Artist: Julie Covington. Album: Unmasked: The Platinum Collection (Deluxe), 2018. Great song from 1977 off the sound track album of the musical Evita and sung by Julie Covington. Her vocal performance in this song gives me chills,it's stunning and beautiful.

Her version of "Don't Cry for Me Argentina" was released as the second single from the film soundtrack on 4 February 1997. A separate version called the "Miami Mix", which included re-recorded vocals in English and Spanish and an Argentinean bandoneon in the song's intro, was promoted to radio. Madonna's vocals received positive critical response and the song went on to reach the top of the charts across Europe, Spain and the remix reached number-one on US Dance Club Songs charts. Covington was extremely intrigued by their proposal, considering Eva Perón to be a non-commercial idea for a musical. Nevertheless, she thought that the songs were great compositions and signed on for recording them. Lloyd Webber and Rice immediately started recording and the first demos were those of "Don't Cry for Me Argentina", "I'd Be Surprisingly Good for You" and "Buenos Aires", with just piano as an accompaniment.

British singer and actress Julie Covington was chosen to portray Eva on the album and sing the song that’s meant to resemble one of the emotional speeches she gave to her adoring public. According to Rice’s recollections in the book 1,000 UK Hits by Jon Kutner and Spencer Leigh, Covington was a bit of a reticent hitmaker, even though the song rose to in Britain. When the single began to show signs of being a hit, she got less and less interested in the project, Rice remembered. The song and album were naturals for a stage presentation, which it eventually became a few years later. Patti LuPone’s powerful take on the song on Broadway is probably the definitive one, but that hasn’t stopped artists ranging from Karen Carpenter to Joan Baez at taking a shot. Sheet Music: 1 Sheets.
