I heard this Tchaikovsky Violin Concerto Op. 35 featuring Vladimir Spivakov played on PBS radio last week and had to stay in my car when I arrived at the office to finish hearing it. I bought a copy of this concerto that featured another world class violinist, but something was just not quite the same and I don't know enough about music to say what.

The Violin Concerto in D major, Op. 35, was written by Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky in 1878, and is one of the best known violin concertos. The concerto is scored for solo violin, two flutes, two oboes, two clarinets in A and B-flat, two bassoons, four horns in F, two trumpets in D, timpani and strings. The piece is in three movements: Allegro moderato (D major). Canzonetta: Andante (G minor). Finale: Allegro vivacissimo (D major). There is no break or pause between the second and third movements.

Concerto for Violin and Orchestra No. 1. Concerto for Violin and Orchestra. These two new versions of the Tchaikovsky Violin Concerto bring obvious parallels, when both these brilliant young virtuosos have been presented by their respective record companies as standard-bearers, and each here follows the apt-and surprisingly rare-course of coupling it with another Slavonic violin concerto.

Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky (Russian: Пётр Ильич Чайковский)(7th May 1840-6th November 1893; Old Style 25th April 1840–25th October 1893) was a Russian composer. He wrote some of the world's most popular concert and theatrical music in the current classical repertoire, including the ballets Swan Lake and The Nutcracker, the 1812 Overture, his First Piano Concerto, several symphonies, and the opera Eugene Onegin.
