Richard Devine’s latest album, SortLave, explores his interest in hands-on interaction with electronic sound. Synthtopia: You mentioned that your music on SortLave sounds very different than your earlier music. What are the aspects of your music that haven’t changed – the things that make one of your tracks a ‘Richard Devine’ track? Richard Devine: I think everyone will still know this to be my music, with certain trade mark things I like doing in my pieces. Richard Devine: The album title derived from a collection of works that span from 2016/2017. The word sort is a word that I choose that meant to arrange systematically in groups; separate according to type, class, etc. This pertained to the collection of tracks, and sorting them into different ns etc.

Richard Devine - SortLave A friend once described Richard Devine's music as being in an "arms race" with like-minded artists such as Autechre or Venetian Snares-an imaginary competition for who could make the most hi-tech and bewildering electronic music. One could argue that Devine, who has spent recent years designing sounds for an electric car and a virtual reality platform, has outrun them all with records of almost inscrutable complexity. As a result, the album often feels a little more organic, even if it still sounds like it's made from alien matter. On "Sentik Pin," the drums are in constant flux, like geese flying in and out of formation. Brux"'s eventual descent into chaos, far from the inscrutable rush of Devine's past work, now feels narrative and purposeful.

Richard Devine is an Atlanta-based electronic musician and sound designer, currently employed by Google. He is recognized for producing a layered and heavily processed sound, combining influences from glitch music to old and modern electronic music. Devine largely records for the Miami-based Schematic Records, which was founded by Josh Kay of Phoenecia. He has also done extensive recording and sample work with Josh Kay under the name DEVSND
