Maj Sjöwall and Per Wahlöö. With an introduction by Henning Mankell (he of the famous Kurt Wallander series) and writes: "I have a strong and indisputable memory that back then I thought of the novel as straightforward and clear, a convincing story presented in an equally convincing form. Roseanna is remarkable, especially where it concerns Henning's last remark. Maj Sjöwall and Per Wahlöö.

Roseanna is the first in the Martin Beck series, written over ten years from 1965 - 1975 by the husband and wife writing team of Maj Sjöwall and Per Wahlöö. Featuring the intriguing, dogged, intuitive complex figure of Detective Inspector Martin Beck and his colleagues in the National Police Homicide Department in Stockholm, the books set a gold standard for all subsequent Scandinavian crime fiction, and for much of the best crime fiction in Britain and America written since the 1960s.
In 1971 the fourth novel in the series, The Laughing Policeman, won an Edgar Award from the Mystery Writers of America. Per Wahlöö died in 1975.
Roseanna is the first in Maj Sjöwall and Per Wahlöö's classic series of Martin Beck novels, and it makes for a solid start. This is very much a Martin Beck novel, introducing the loner First Detective Inspector with the National Police who seems always lost in thought. He's in that mid-life crisis range, in a passionless marriage with two kids, one on the verge of adolescence, devoted to his job but also using it as an excuse to keep himself occupied. He was depressed and slept poorly. For a stand-alone novel this would be pretty thin, but as the first in a series of ten the slow character build-up can pass; certainly, one gets a sense of the guy. Roseanna still feels a bit experimental, Sjöwall and Wahlöö trying out a variety of things, some with greater success than others.
By: Per Wahlöö, Maj Sjöwall. Narrated by: Neil Pearson, full cast, Steven Mackintosh. Length: 10 hrs and 30 mins. Written by Swedish husband and wife team Maj Sjöwall and Per Wahlöö between 1965 and 1975, the 10-book series set a gold standard for all subsequent Scandinavian crime fiction. Long before Kurt Wallander or Harry Hole, Beck was the original flawed policeman, working with a motley collection of colleagues to uncover the cruelty and injustice lurking beneath the surface of Sweden's liberal society.
Maj Sjöwall and Per Wahlöö's first Martin Beck mystery, "Roseanna," deals with the unexpected discovery of a corpse in Motala, Sweden, when a bucket dredging machine unclogs a canal to prepare it for the spring boat traffic. On a warm and beautiful day, the bucket gobbles up not only mud but the nude body of a young woman in her late twenties. com User, August 21, 2007. For those who have read all of Commisar Wallender's cases there are two directions to go in. One is forward, to Icelandic author Arnaldur Indridasen, another is backward in time to the mysteries of Sjöwall and Wahlöö. both paths should be taken! S & W write clearly in a psycho-sociological vein that must (as he admits) have influenced Mankell.
