The "Move It" that opens the disc is not the Cliff Richard song but a slower, raunchier number with vocal choruses carrying a lot of the melody. Maybe Baby" is the Buddy Holly song, however, and the group does a decent job of singing it. Unfortunately, not a lot of what else is here is exactly first-rate material - "It Never Works Out for Me" is a tuneless bore, and much of the rest is similarly uninteresting, and generally vocals were not this band's strong point, based on the evidence here

Two Chantays albums on one CD, comprising much of the surf band's early '60s repertory. The "Move It" that opens the disc is not the Cliff Richard song but a slower, raunchier number with vocal choruses carrying a lot of the melody. The Pipeline album includes several attempts to emulate that hit, repeating its introduction and mimicking passages, but without much of the vitality or excitement of "Pipeline. The best parts of the album are the band's instrumental cover of Del Shannon's "Runaway," which is a tense, exciting workout for the entire band - and that goes double for lead guitarist Bob Spickard and pianist Bob Marshall, and "Blunderbus," an almost bluesy number that, if not for the piano, could almost pass for a Yardbirds demo.
On the Pipeline album they didn't cover other bands' tunes, which was a common and accepted practice among them; no Miserlou Mr. Moto or Surf Rider here. The tunes by others they included are unusual: Lonesome Road, mostly part of the contemporaneous folk scene; Ghost riders In the Sky, the old country song made a big hit by Vaughn Monroe in 1949 and also covered by Dick dale; Santo & Johnny's Sleep Walk, a hit in 1959; and Del Shannon's Runaway, a in 1961. EXTRA NOTE: Be sure to check out The Chantays appearance on The Lawrence Welk Show to promote Pipeline. There weren't many venues for surf bands on TV, so they went where they could go. It's on You Tube.
from the album Pipeline. December 1962, January 1963. Although they had myriad surf tunes, "Pipeline" was The Chantays' only hit single, and is considered one of the landmarks of the surf genre. The track's distinctive sound was largely due to the mix being "upside down" when compared to standard rock and roll of the era; the bass guitar, electric piano and rhythm guitar were at the forefront, while the lead guitar and drums were less prominent
