After Antonin Dvořák finished composing his String Quartet No. 12, Op. 96, in F Major, he wrote at the end of the manuscript, Thanks be to God. I am satisfied. Today, the String Quartet No. 12 is one of Dvořák ’s most played works. The piece is a standard string quartet with four movements: The first movement is in sonata form, the second movement is a slow aria, the third movement is a scherzo with two trios and the final movement is a sonata-rondo. Within the first movement, there is a ’smiling contentment of a bucolic existence’ in its rustling tremolos, pizzicato touches, and airy principal theme that personifies Dvořák ’s freedom of being in Spillville. Dvořák ’s String Quartet No. 12 exemplifies his fascination with the fusion of American/Bohemian life in Spillville through the use of pentatonic scales.
