Skunkworks is an alternative rock album released in 1996 by Iron Maiden frontman Bruce Dickinson. The singer had intended Skunkworks to be the debut album of a band by the same name. However, his label would not issue the record under any name other than Bruce Dickinson. The album moved from Maiden's progressive style to an alternative rock sound similar to bands such as Soundgarden, with lyrics about science and technology. Its name refers to the code name for a military testing program
Displaying a sometimes Rush-like refined prog groove and plenty of his traditional re lyrical themes, Bruce Dickinson deserves high marks for Skunkworks, the ex-Iron Maiden vocalist's fourth solo effort. This 1996 release signals Dickinson's tentative shift toward music generally in tune with (but still somewhat restrained when compared to) his seminal work with Maiden.

As for the album itself, Skunkworks is probably one of the most startlingly different albums you're bound to hear. For one, it's not only a departure from Maiden but a departure from the two albums that preceded it. None of the songs on it can be considered metal, and I doubt that even Bruce himself would try to advertise it as such. The album has a ive rock sound to it, and it's funny that I mention the "alternative" part, as this was released the same year that Metallica had dropped a big steaming Load on our ears
For his third solo album, Dickinson broadens his horizons even further and takes us on an enjoyable ride. It was for me at least. Slightly more polished sounding than 'Balls To Picasso' or 'Tattooed Millionaire', the rawness is missed but the songs never sound stale or dull. This would be the best solo album in most singers careers, however Bruce followed this up with 'Accident of Birth', 'Chemical Wedding', and 'Tyranny of Souls' which were all incredible. Skunkworks marked a key turning point for Bruce Dickinson (not to mention the eventually reunited Iron Maiden). Oddly overlooked during the '90s infatuation with finding "new sounds.
