Don Winslow was the brainchild of Frank V. Martinek, a veteran of World War I Naval intelligence. Don was a lieutenant commander in Naval intelligence. He didn't have much personality, since his main function was to make the Navy look good, but he was smart and good in a fight - had to be, because his job was to save the world from The Scorpion (no relation), The Crocodile, Dr. Q, and other colorful and capable bad guys. He had a Naval girlfriend, too - Mercedes Colby, who had no less than two admirals in her family, and who became a nurse for the Navy during World War II. Don's sidekick was Lt. Red Pennington, who provided a lot of muscle.
Don Winslow is an American author most recognized for his crime and mystery novels. Many of his books are set in California. Five of his novels feature private investigator Neal Carey. He has also co-written screenplays for Savages, Satori, and other adaptations of his novels with r Shane Salerno. Winslow was born in New York City on Halloween night 1953, but grew up in Perryville, a beach town near the village of Matunuck, Rhode Island
