In early 1984, Miles began to work on songs for his next album and went on tour to promote his current album Play On. In late spring 1984, Miles and Marshall wrote more songs from the album while their manager was looking for a new record label. Some time later, while he was performing in a residence in Ibiza, Miles met Phil Carson, who was an executive from Atlantic Records.

Miles High is the fifth solo album by John Miles. It was released in 1981 on the EMI label (EMC 3374), and in January 2016 was reissued for the first time on CD by Cherry Red Records. Miles High was originally released in August 1981 and was John Miles first album for EMI, the previous four all having been released by Decca Records. Miles High peaked at N. 6 in the UK album chart and is Miles’ last solo chart entry to date.
