Ralph Vaughan Williams OM (/reɪf vɔːn/ (listen); 12 October 1872 – 26 August 1958) was an English composer. His works include operas, ballets, chamber music, secular and religious vocal pieces and orchestral compositions including nine symphonies, written over sixty years. Strongly influenced by Tudor music and English folk-song, his output marked a decisive break in British music from its German-dominated style of the 19th century.

Vaughan Williams considered Boult the perfect interpreter of his music, and said so frequently. This disc is part of Boult's second series, the one for EMI recorded from 1967 to 1972 to take advantage of the considerable advances in sound since his early 50's Decca recordings. When Vaughan Williams died in 1958, a friend attending him and his family immediately sprang to the roof of his house and played this trumpet melody to announce the passing of the great composer. This movement is followed by a rousing Moderato and then ends with a movement which includes a wordless soprano part, a quiet but sad theme, a wordless prayer for those slaughtered in the Great War.

The music of Ralph (pronounced "Rafe") Vaughan Williams is the sonic distillation of an idealized pastoral England. The beloved "Lark Ascending," for instance, evokes green fields divided by hedgerows, much as "In the Fen Country" conjures the austere Lincolnshire countryside
