Amsterdam Live Concerts 1953. Think of Big Bill Broonzy as Leadbelly with sharper teeth. Like the seminal Texas strummer, Broonzy worked in the songster tradition, using guitar purely as accompaniment to his storytelling rather than a means of virtuosic expression. But Broonzy's political lyrics-especially the famed color-line critique "Black, Brown, and White," with its warning "if you're black, get back"-are more direct. So are his onstage observations about racism and poverty in America in the two just-unveiled concerts on this two-disc set. As the liner notes explain, gin and the warmth.

Big Bill Broonzy (born Lee Conley Bradley, June 26, 1903 – August 14, 1958) was an American blues singer, songwriter and guitarist. His career began in the 1920s, when he played country blues to mostly African-American audiences. Through the 1930s and 1940s he successfully navigated a transition in style to a more urban blues sound popular with working-class African-American audiences. Like many veterans after the Second World War, Big Bill Broonzy went to college to get an education. However, Broonzy's stint at Iowa State University differed from most other GIs. First, he served in the US Army during World War I rather than World War II. More significantly, he worked at the school as a janitor rather than attended as a student . Ahead of her next album, Is It the Kiss, folk artist Ana Egge sweetly ruminates over classic country tales with her new single, "Cocaine Cowboys".
Amsterdam Live Concerts 1953 (Munich). You can't get there without going through Big Bill. This Taj Mahal-ascribed quote illustrates Broonzy's influence on African-American music last century, and – thanks to these unvaulted concerts – into the future. One of 17 children born to parents who endured slavery, William Lee Conley Broonzy (1893-1958) went from itinerant laborer to international bluesman in his lifetime. Succumbing to cancer at his creative peak is the only reason his name isn't more widely known, because as these two CDs verify, the big man was a musical.
