Portrait of a Legend 1951-1964. Portrait of a Legend 1951-1964 eclipses RCA's early-'80s The Man and His Music, going it better in running time but losing some important recordings - "That's Heaven to Me" and "Soothe Me," arguably one of Cooke's most important songs - in the process of summing up his career

Pretty much all the Sam Cooke most people need (and people DO need some Sam Cooke), this attractive package draws from Cooke's Specialty, Keen and RCA Victor recordings, all 30 of them hits or especially significant. The liner notes, by Cooke biographer Peter Guralnick, provide a lot of information in relatively little space, and there's even a list of musicians on most of the RCA sessions. I couldn't recommend this collection more.

Portrait Of A Legend 1951-1964. Gatefold, Double Vinyl. From Sam Cooke's teenage debut as a full fledged member of the legendary Soul Stirrers in 1951 through his career as a rhythm and blues phenomenon thanks to the recordings for which he is acknowledged as the progenitor of soul music.

The discography of Sam Cooke, an African-American recording artist, singer-songwriter and entrepreneur, consists of fifteen studio albums (including one collaborative album and two notable posthumous releases), two live albums, and numerous compilations. Over the course of his eight-year career, Cooke placed 29 singles in the Top 40 on the Billboard Pop Singles chart. He also placed 20 singles in the Top Ten of Billboard's R&B chart, Black Singles chart.

Listen free to Sam Cooke – Portrait of a Legend 1951-1964 (Touch the Hem of His Garment, Lovable and more). Sam Cooke was constantly writing. In the car. In hotel rooms and, later, in a notebook he kept, filled with his sketches as well as his lyrics. When he was still with the Soul Stirrers, his friend and fellow gospel singer, . Alexander, manager of the Pilgrim Travellers, bought him a book on songwriting, and he absorbed its lessons: the function of verse and chorus, how to construct a bridge, above all the importance of simplicity -the key to a good song,.

Sam Cooke's yours; he'll never grow ol. The cruel double-truth of this statement, muttered by soul DJ The Magnificent Montague in concluding a 1964 interview with the singer, would quickly become all too apparent with Cooke's untimely death two weeks before Christmas. Now, if Otis Redding's death was a tragedy; Sam Cooke's was doubly so. Like Redding, Sam Cooke was a superstar when he died. Unlike Redding, the legend of Cooke' wasn't
