Candles' in the rain-- War-Zonals' driving the shadow O'er forever comes the pain. I bought this album when just released, an advantage of working in the only record shop in my hometown in Australia on Saturday mornings and Thursday nights when I was in high school. I had the best job of all my mates. I still have this album (and about 300 others) that I bought through this time. All still immaculate condition but still regularly listened to, looked after and treasured. you cant ask for more than that as an artist.

Melanie (last name: Safka) performed in the rain at Woodstock on the first day of the festival (August 15, 1969). When the rain stopped, members of the crowd lit candles to let other people know that everything was "bright" (OK). Melanie was so moved by the sight that she wrote this song to commemorate it. The Edwin Hawkins Singers backed Melanie on this track. They got a deal with Melanie's label Buddah Records in 1969 when "Oh Happy Day," recorded in church and sold as part of an album to raise money for the choir, started getting airplay on various radio stations  . Melanie wrote the song after performing at Woodstock in August 1969; the song's lyrics describe what she felt as she looked out at the sea of people attending the music event. Lay Down is also associated with certain events occurring during the Moratorium to End the War in Vietnam, held in the autumn of 1969. In most territories the album's spoken-word title track "Candles in the Rain" – also part of the single's title - featured as the B-side.

Candles in the Rain is singer Melanie's third album. Released in 1970, the album produced Melanie's first Top Ten single in North America, "Lay Down (Candles in the Rain)", which was inspired by the crowd's reaction to her performance at Woodstock. The cover of the Rolling Stones' 1967 song "Ruby Tuesday" reached the Top Ten in the United Kingdom. All songs written by Melanie Safka except where noted. Candles in the Rain" 1:42.

22-year-old Melanie Safka was one of the more unlikely performers at Woodstock in 1969. Speaking of how she wrote (Lay Down) Candles In The Rain, Melanie says, I left that field with that song in my head, the anthemic part. The lyrics speak to the sense of community that washed over Safka on that magical night. It was this incredible flow of human power being directed toward me, she says. And I got to see the hillside light up like so many fireflies. Melanie got some assistance on the song from the Edwin Hawkins Singers, who had their own gospel hit with their arrangement of Oh Happy Day two years earlier.
