Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart (1756–1791) composed several masses and separate mass movements (such as Kyrie). Mozart composed most of his masses as a church musician in Salzburg: Masses for regular Sundays or smaller feasts belonged to the missa brevis type. In the context of Mozart's masses brevis (short) applies primarily to the duration, . the whole mass ceremony took no longer than three quarters of an hour.

The famous Ave verum corpus is played and sung beautifully. The second or third time I listened to this recording I started noticing some of the subtleties in the accompaniment brought out by Davis. He was certainly on Mozart's wavelength when this was recorded! Last on the program is the Exsultate jubilate sung, as was the Laudate Dominum, by Kiri Te Kanawa. Her singing is lovely and she handles the coluratura well. She has a good trill, but it is not consistently strong.
Exsultate, jubilate, K165 is easily the most famous of Mozart’s sacred settings for soprano. It was written following the success of Mozart’s opera Lucio Silla, first staged in Milan at Christmas 1772.
