Dinu Lipatti recorded Frédéric Chopin's 14 Waltzes for EMI in July 1950, mere months before his death at age 33. Despite the leukemia that had been diagnosed a few years earlier that had weakened him to the point of canceling international tours, Lipatti still found enough strength to record these pieces in Geneva, Switzerland, and they have been an essential part of his legacy ever since. Even though these performances are a little compressed in sound and limited in resonance, that is not the main thing listeners will notice.

Dinu Constantin Lipatti (Romanian pronunciation: ( listen); 1 April 1917 – 2 December 1950) was a Romanian classical pianist and composer whose career was cut short by his death from causes related to Hodgkin's disease at age 33. He was elected posthumously to the Romanian Academy. Coming to the last one, No. 2 in A-flat, he found he was too exhausted to play it and he offered instead Jesu, Joy of Man's Desiring, the piece with which he had begun his professional career only fifteen years before.
