Clap Your Hands Say Yeah (often abbreviated CYHSY) is the musical project of American indie rock musician Alec Ounsworth. The group was founded in 2004 and is based in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, and Brooklyn, New York. Until 2014, the project operated as a band with drummer Sean Greenhalgh being a member for its entirety
Standing on top of a mountain of hype and praise after the success of their first two self-released albums, Clap Your Hands Say Yeah did what few bands in their position would do: they took a break. Rather than striking while the iron was hot and getting another release into the impatient little hands of their fan base, they walked away to pursue other projects, allowing their members to follow all of their other ideas wherever they might take them for a couple years before eventually coming back together on their third album, Hysterical.
Clap Your Hands Say Yeah's fourth full-length was preceded by the departure of three fifths of the band’s formative line-up, and includes contributions from the National's Matt Berninger and Kid Koala. The album has the feel of a band being reconstructed in real time. Little Moments EP. by: Ian Cohen. Following 2011’s tepid Hysterical and the departure of two band members, Clap Your Hands Say Yeah's Little Moments EP finds Alec Ounsworth making a complete left turn. In short, CYHSY have gone full-on electro-pop.

Their first new album in more than three years, Hysterical marks a major milestone in the continuing evolution of Clap Your Hands Say Yeah. Born out of an intensely collaborative process in which songs were constructed, dismantled, and then rebuilt anew, the album finds the band their most confident and creative, expertly expanding upon its already distinctive sound. Hysterical is a step back to catchy tunes, wonderfully odd lyrics and that certain light sound that was present on Clap Your Hands Say Yeah.
Hysterical does little to alter this. The aforementioned synths wash over the whole thing, but it's a blur made up of arpeggios, distortion and echo. It's all held together admirably by John Congleton, a producer whose own work with The Paper Chase expertly blended viciously disparate ideas. Luckily CYHSY mainman Alec Ounsworth's way of singing a melody already has an inbuilt ambiguity; it winds around the elementary music sounding resigned, sad but putting on a brave face. The rest fill the album adequately, but really only serve to further embed that keyboard massage that glues everything together. Misspent Youth is particularly poignant, the ripples of discordance and fading echo in the middle like shattering a fond flashback. Though the arrangement still sounds dense, Ounsworth's vulnerable vocal brings an intense melancholy to the song.
