This reissue of Oscar Peterson's live Toronto recording in the Desert Island Discs series at Verve brings to light the question that jazz audiences were debating at the time. With Peterson's legerdemain rhythmic possibilities, his knotting, shimmering waves of notes, his insanely huge harmonic structures, and his dense clusters played in every solo, half the jazz populace wondered if all the swinging noodling might be a skillful medicine show while the other half considered it genius.

Here's a jazz trio par excellence, making full use in 1956 of the setting's possibilities of airtight collaboration and shifting emphasis. Oscar Peterson and his classic trio-mates, Herb Ellis on guitar and Ray Brown on bass, heading straight at a lively selection, never hint that they might have liked a drummer along. The latter album, on the other hand, is the more breathtaking, a pyrotechnical work-out on standards and bebop classics that amounts to an exhausting experience for any listener. Either album represents an awesome legacy, a reason to run for cover. Possession of both albums is not recommended for the faint of heart.
The Trio is a live album by Oscar Peterson, Joe Pass and Niels-Henning Ørsted Pedersen that was released in 1974. The album won the Grammy Award for Best Jazz Performance by a Group in 1975.

Oscar Peterson Trio 1965. Thejazzsingers Jazz in Holland.
It was Oscar Peterson's most succesful album and helped push his trio to even higher popularity than it already was, after his time when he was on tour with the JATP with Norman Granz. The trio featured Ray Brown on bass and Ed Thigpen on drums and thiers was on of the tightest trio's at the time. The album is pretty much filled with classic smooth and bebop jazz tracks that all transfer very well from one to the next making it a well produced album as well (which of course was done by Norman Granz. There's something so striking about the cover art as well with this big ominous.
