Modern Times Synopsis. Charlie is a factory worker in this hectic age - a minor cog in the grinding wheels of industry. Filming Modern Times. Chaplin was acutely preoccupied with the social and economic problems of this new age. In 1931 and 1932 he had left Hollywood behind, to embark on an 18-month world tour. Music by Charles Chaplin, Lyrics by John Turner and Geoffrey Parsons. Deleted scene from Modern Times

Chaplin directing Modern Times. As he had done for City Lights Chaplin composed his own musical score, giving his arrangers and conductors a harder time than usual, with the result that the distinguished Hollywood musician Alfred Newman walked off the film. The film became the victim of a strange charge of plagiarism. Chaplin and his lawyers remained convinced that the determination of the German-dominated company was revenge for the anti-Nazi sentiment of The Great Dictator. Happily for posterity, Tobis failed in their original demand to have Chaplin¹s film permanently suppressed. It remains as relevant, in human terms, for the 21st century. The Challenge of Sound.

Charlie Chaplin's Modern Times album. Charlie Chaplin Lyrics provided by SongLyrics.

Director: Charles Chaplin. Starring: A factory worker, A gamine, Café proprietor and others. Modern Times, Charlie Chaplin’s last outing as the Little Tramp, puts the iconic character to work as a giddily inept factory employee who becomes smitten with a gorgeous gamine (Paulette Goddard).

Charlie turns against modern society, the machine age, (The use of sound in films ?) and progress. Firstly we see him frantically trying to keep up with a production line, tightening bolts. He is selected for an experiment with an automatic feeding machine, but various mishaps leads his boss to believe he has gone mad, and Charlie is sent to a mental hospital - When he gets out, he is mistaken for a communist while waving a red flag, sent to jail, foils a jailbreak, and is let out again. The last verse of the Tramp's gibberish song is also shown as a deleted scene on the Chaplin Collection version of Modern Times and with lyrics to it as a karaoke piece.
