The Roches (Maggie, Terre, and Suzzy Roche) were a vocal group of three songwriting Irish-American sisters from Park Ridge, New Jersey, known for their "unusual" and "rich" harmonies, quirky lyrics, and casually comedic stage performances. The Roches were active as performers and recording artists from the mid-1970s through 2017, at various times performing as a trio and in pairs.

This copy says "contains previously released material" in the upper left corner; this is a re-release (1981 vs. 1975). A very strong album, Seductive Reasoning consists of all-original songs, all but one of which was written by Maggie Roche (the exception being "Wigglin' Man," co-written by Terre. The songs are quite distinct from one another, from regretful/topical ("Down the Dream") to silly ("If You Emptied Out. the harmonies on the latter are absolutely stellar and the tune demands loud play, and the guitar is clearly the rhythm of producer (of the song) Paul Simon, and is highly reminiscent of his own "Loves Me Like a Rock.

When young Maggie Roche introduced herself to Paul Simon, it is easy to see what attracted him to her songs and the act she had with her sister, Terre. Roche has an intelligent, individual songwriting style, and her songs serve as the vehicle for two-part harmonies with Terre, the soprano, and herself on alto, a sort of distaff version of Simon & Garfunkel. Simon was sufficiently interested to use the two on There Goes Rhymin' Simon. But the superior musicianship and production are not what make Seductive Reasoning an outstanding album. Rather, it is most notable as the auspicious debut of a remarkable songwriter. Roche has the perspective of a young woman thoughtfully, if confusedly, making her way through the romantic, sexual, and career thickets of early adulthood. Her gift for wordplay expresses her uncertainties well. There ought to be something to fall back on," she writes in "Down the Dream," "like a knife or a career.

One of my favourite Reasoning songs & Thirteenth Hour' kicks off the album, and this confident folk/acoustic rock interpretation has quickly become not only my preferred version, but one of my favourite tracks from the band overall. Script Switch Trigger' is a particularly sad reading, while the middle takes on a beautiful dreamy ambience.

Seductive Reasoning was the first record released by any configuration of Roches. Maggie and Terre were fresh off doing backing vocals on Here Comes Rhymin' Simon, and Maggie had a whole bunch of songs swirling around her head. This lovely reissue contains her charming (if minimal) notes about where and how the songs were written: New York City, college tours in Pittsburgh, and Baton Rouge. Like everything the sisters Roche ever recorded, Seductive Reasoning is hard to categorize. One minute they are unleashing slow pretty ballads like album closer "Jill of All Trades" and "West Virginia," with its massive string swells and devastating lyrics: "Nineteen, Charleston, Mescaline, He said he was a genius, B-plus average in civil engineering

Maggie Roche, the songwriter whose serene alto anchored the close harmonies of the Roches, her trio with her sisters, Terre and Suzzy, died on Saturday. She was 65. Suzzy Roche said in a statement that the cause was breast cancer. She did not say where her sister died. She was smart, wickedly funny, and authentic - not a false bone in her body - a brilliant songwriter, with a distinct unique perspective, all heart and soul.
