The Master Trio is an album by jazz pianist Tommy Flanagan, bassist Ron Carter and drummer Tony Williams. Pianist Tommy Flanagan and bassist Ron Carter had recorded together numerous times since 1960. In contrast, this recording session (which also resulted in the album Blues in the Closet) was Flanagan's only recording with drummer Tony Williams. The album was recorded on June 16 and 17, 1983, at A&R Recording Studio in New York City.

Tony Williams' drum work also lacks subtlety, and while he does less damage than Carter, together they end up sinking what should have been a good session. For Ella, and Sea Changes. Similarly, Tony Williams' driving, aggressive ride cymbal is counterproductive to the "reactive" creations of one of the all-time greats of the modern jazz piano. Flanagan is best heard with players like George Mraz and Al Foster, both of whom understand and contribute to his uniquely unpretentious, unforced creations of dynamic scale.
