The Violin Concerto in D major, Op. 35, was written by Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky in 1878, and is one of the best known violin concertos. Tchaikovsky would eventually develop into a major figure in 19th century music, due in large part to the influence of two Russian-born, but German-trained, brothers: Anton and Nikolai Rubinstein. Anton, a brilliant pianist often favorably compared to Franz Liszt, was director of the Conservatory and a teacher of orchestration; he was the first strong influence on the young composer’s career. In 1866, Nikolai, an almost equally adept pianist, became the first director of the Moscow Conservatory. For example, the famous opening theme in the orchestra is in the wrong key and is never repeated. It simply stands by itself as a grandiose statement bearing no relationship to what will follow.
