Profile: R&B and doo-wop group from New York. Members: Ray Hulbert, lead, Joe Lipscomb, second tenor, Oliver James, bariton, and Louis O'Neil, bass. Do NOT confuse with the Detroit vocal group The Mello-Tones (2) ("Rosie Lee"). For the reggae vocal group, see The Mellotones. Gloria Mann, The Mello-Tones - Rhythm And Blues Bit ‎(7", EP). Decca.

The Mello-Tones: not exactly a household name, even in their heyday. They found a manager in Cliff Martinez, who also handled the Crows, Crickets, Sparks Of Rhythm, and Pretenders, among others. However, the Mello-Tones got to record for Decca through their own efforts. While the Gloria Mann tunes were current, the re-release of the Mello-Tones' out-of-date style makes for a bizarre pairing. Since the songs didn't sell well in the first place, it's hard to imagine why they were re-released over two years later. Next, they went to audition for George Goldner at Gee records.

Rhythm and blues is a popular music genre combining jazz, gospel, and blues influences. Jerry Wexler of Billboard magazine coined the term rhythm and blues in 1948 as a musical marketing term in the United States. It replaced the term "race music", which originally came from within the black community, but was deemed offensive in the postwar world.

The best R&B singers have been topping the pop charts for years as rhythm and blues has remained bedrock of music  . Vote or re-rank this list according to how you think it should reflect your opinion on R&B.
