Clemons’ album takes a long view on resolution. Fear & Love has a clear Side A and Side B. The first few songs are dark and introspective - somewhere between brooding alternative rock and slow soul music - as they track Clemons’ recent heartbreak. Then, on the uplift of the optimistic A Little Bit Sweet, a change of mood blows into the second half of the record. Not surprisingly, Clemons begins wailing on the sax during the second half. A Little Bit Sweet closes with a sax solo that recalls his uncle’s most intense work. Think of him on the Thunder Road album. From there, the rock, joy and saxophone lines only build - Just Stay kicks off with a horn burst that recalls King Curtis’ 1950s jams. Clemons chuckles at the Curtis reference, but he understands the comparison makes sense.
