First released in 1969, after guitarist Jimmy Dawkins had served a long apprenticeship as a sideman in the Chicago electric blues scene, Fast Fingers remains one of the finest pure electric blues albums of its era. Dawkins proves to be a solid songwriter and an able singer, although the best moments on the album invariably come when he tears off a casually perfect, deeply soulful, but never showy electric solo.

American blues musician. Dawkins in March 1981. Background information. In 1969, thanks to the efforts of his friend Magic Sam, his first album, Fast Fingers, was released by Delmark Records. It won the Grand Prix du Disque from the Hot Club de France

Renews automatically. The French awarded his FAST FINGERS album the prestigious "Grand Prix du Disque (apparently prestigious in France) for good reason. Which begs the question why did this guy not get more popular? Anywhere else, really. And if nothing else why not, at least, THIS Jimmy Dawkins album from Delmark (Chicago) recorded in 1969!? Jimmy Dawkins did receive local "Chicago Legend" status for honing his skills on it's influential West Side music scene and it was during the 1960's he played mostly as a side man learning the trade

Chicago bluesman Jimmy "Fast Fingers" Dawkins, known for his stellar guitar playing and mellow singing voice, has died. He was 76. Delmark Records owner Bob Koester said Friday that Dawkins died Wednesday. The cause of death wasn't immediately known. James Henry Dawkins was born in Tchula, Miss. An only child, Dawkins taught himself to play guitar before moving to Chicago in the 1950s. Koester said Dawkins did not begin his music career immediately, working instead in a box factory before taking to Chicago's streets to play for tips. Dawkins first album, "Fast Fingers," released on the Delmark label in 1969, boosted Dawkins' reputation, particularly in Europe and Japan, where he toured frequently. He didn't like his nickname," Koester said. It gave the impression that he played only upbeat music.
