Charles Flores (1970 – August 22, 2012) was a Cuban-born American jazz bassist. Flores won a Grammy Award for Best Latin Jazz Album for his work with the Michel Camilo Trio. Flores was born in Cuba in 1970. He became a bassist when he was 10 years old, but Cuban laws prohibited an in depth study of jazz and other American genres of music. Flores eventually immigrated to the United States as a refugee and settled in Hartford, Connecticut, where his wife, Miriam Flores, had relatives.

Sadly, Charles Flores’ sophomore solo CD-a sturdy set of Latin jazz originals-is a d one. The Cuban-born Flores, a member of the Michel Camilo Trio since 2002, succumbed to cancer last August. Joined here by Camilo drummer Cliff Almond, pianist Elio Villafranca and guest guitarist Wayne Krantz, Flores favors his 6-string, most effectively handling the melody on the swaying Miriam, and issuing a dense 6/8 groove and eventful solo on Influence. Cuban born pianist Elio Villafranca has spent a lifetime observing the space between different worlds. He spent his childhood in the small Piñar de Rio region on the Western coast of Cuba and then jumped into the centralized bustle of Havana. He went through a broad and varied musical education that not only focused on the piano, but also included intensive investigations of the guitar, percussion, and composition. Elio Villafranca: Cuba as many other people know was one of the last countries to liberate the slave. Actually the slave trade in Cuba lasted way longer than after all the slaves were "officially" free. In Cuba the freedom of the slaves was not a pact or a treaty like in the United States where they decided to free the slaves and just move on and use machines for labor.

Pianist Elio Villafranca is much-in-demand these days with a new CD release (Caribbean Tinge-Motema Music), some very special dates at Jazz at Lincoln Center, and a performance at the annual Jazz Journalists Awards ceremony.
