Ann Lee Peebles (born April 27, 1947) is an American singer and songwriter who gained celebrity for her Memphis soul albums of the 1970s for Hi Records. Two of her most popular songs are "I Can't Stand the Rain", which she wrote with her husband Don Bryant and radio broadcaster Bernie Miller, and "I'm Gonna Tear Your Playhouse Down". In 2014, Ann Peebles was inducted into the Memphis Music Hall of Fame.

Long before a solo recording career beckoned Ann Peebles supported the legendary Soul Stirrers on tour. The experience proved inspirational, the group featuring as it did the magical Sam Cooke. Later she would make a great Queen to Al Green's King at Hi Records where she recorded a series of great singles and 7 albums. Amongst that work was 'I Can't Stand the Rain', a record which John Lennon described as 'the greatest single ever'. You'll find it here with much more.

Ann Peebles voice, while complemeted immensely by the Hodges Bros. tight and thick 70’s funk/soul soundings, offers up an album as strong as any Al Green album released around the same period. Definitely a missing must have among the many exhaustive lists of must haves, Straight From the Heart reveals the power of an awesome rhythm section when pushed and challenged by an accomplished singer. This four-disc box set from Proper assembles all four original volumes they issued separately with a detailed booklet of notes.
