Born in 1929, Josef Suk was the Grandson of the Czech composer Josef Suk and the great-grandson of Dvorak. Suk plays the two Romances with equally pure and angelic tone, and again (this time with Marriner and his chamber ensemble the Academy of Saint Martin in the Fields) slow tempos that tend to solemnize and sentimentalize the music a little more than it deserves. But that was the established norm back then, and Marriner does bring out many felicitous orchestral details and has his ensemble play with fine crispness and clarity.
