Earl Rudolph " Bud " Powell (September 27, 1924 – July 31, 1966) was an American jazz pianist. Though Thelonious Monk was a close friend and influence, his greatest piano influence was Art Tatum. Along with Charlie Parker, Monk, and Dizzy Gillespie, Powell was a leading figure in the development of modern jazz, or bebop. His virtuosity led many to call him the Charlie Parker of the piano.
Earl Rudolph "Bud" Powell (September 27, 1924 – July 31, 1966) was an American jazz pianist. Powell was the pianist on a handful of Williams's recording dates in 1944, the last of which included the first-ever recording of Monk's "'Round Midnight". His tenure with Williams was terminated one night in Philadelphia, in January 1945, when he got separated from the other band members once they had left the bandstand at the end of the evening.
Bud Powell was unquestionably a major talent. Sadly he was also unquestionably mad. After The Scene Changes, he went to France, stayed for several years, returned to the . His later records aren't his best, but they all show flashes of brilliant exuberance. They're all worth a good listen, and if you're a piano fan, they're worth owning. A side note: Check out the adorable album cover, featuring Powell at the keyboard with his young son looking over his shoulder. Jazz fans are first and foremost interested in listening to and appreciating the music and not likely to want to get inebriated while doing so because it is hard to really listen well to jazz if one is drunk. Jazz fans are good people and worth getting to know. Venture out and try talking to fans around you.
