The Jacob Fred Jazz Odyssey is a trio that is as eccentric as its name, since there is no Jacob Fred! . The Sameness of Difference, in addition to originals by the group members, includes unique versions of numbers by Jimi Hendrix, Charles Mingus, and Dave Brubeck (a version of "In Your Own Sweet Way" that retains its melody but little else) and is a very unpredictable if occasionally erratic outing.

Jacob Fred Jazz Odyssey can hardly help being compared to these more prominent (and major label) piano/bass/drum trios. They seem to be up to similar hi-jinks - covering Hendrix and Björk, setting up the occasional groove, trying to redefine how a jazz group functions. Jacob Fred Jazz Odyssey. 2005 saw the release of their second album under Dorn and Hyena, The Sameness of Difference, the first release to include JFJO's uniquely arranged covers of songs by diverse contemporary musicians such as Björk and The Flaming Lips, as well as Dave Brubeck, Charles Mingus, Jimi Hendrix, Brian Wilson, and Neil Young.
