Despite six decades of singing, the Spiritualaires certainly aren’t perfectionists. At times, such as on the baptismal hymn Come Over Here, it takes them a whole beat to get in tune. These kinds of glaring mistakes put them a notch below, say, the Five Blind Boys of Alabama, but the Spiritualaires’ bluesy rawness makes them charming traditionalists unaffected by the slick production and large choirs that dominate contemporary gospel. Singing Songs of Praise (CaseQuarter/Aum Fidelity) is the first album by the Spiritualaires of Hurtsboro, Alabama, a gospel group whose members have been singing together for half a century. Studio sessions from 2004 are interspersed with songs (and commercials) from the Spiritualaires’ long-running Sunday-morning radio show. The sound is sparse - five voices backed only by an electric guitar - in music that encompasses sustained close-harmony songs, a bluesy shuffle and even a country gospel song. And the very basic recordings make the Spiritualaires sound eerie as well as devout.

I was just searching on here out of curiousity. Music does run in the family. I have a cousin (Robert Marion) and great-uncle (Sam Relf) in the group lineup.
