James Spaulding Plays the Legacy of Duke Ellington. A versatile musician equally at home on flute or alto saxophone, James Spaulding's varied and eclectic career runs the gamut from straight-ahead, no-nonsense Hard Bop to free-form improvisation. In the 1960s, he worked as a sideman with everyone from Freddie Hubbard to Sun Ra. In contrast to these groundbreaking sessions, his 1976 solo debut consisted entirely of Duke Ellington compositions. Within Spaulding's expansive saxophone style, one can hear traces of Charlie Parker's dazzling Bebop flights and Ornette Coleman's t, blues-drenched Free Jazz.
