The Famous 1938 Carnegie Hall Jazz Concert by Benny Goodman, Columbia Records catalogue item SL-160, is a two-disc LP of swing and jazz music recorded at Carnegie Hall in New York City on January 16, 1938. First issued in 1950, the landmark recording captured the premiere performance given by a big band in the famed concert venue. The event has been described as "the single most important jazz or popular music concert in history: jazz's 'coming out' party to the world of 'respectable' music.

This is a properly split and tagged version of this classic live Jazz album which already has been uploaded to the Internet Archive by Bob Varney. Changes/reason for this upload are: The complete concert bundled in one release. Individual files for each song (losslessly generated using mp3directCut). Proper tagging (ID3v2 & ID3v1).

Benny Goodman's January 16, 1938, Carnegie Hall concert is considered the single most important jazz or popular music concert in history: jazz's "coming out" party to the world of "respectable" music, held right in that throne room of musical respectability, Carnegie Hall. The 1950-vintage three-album set from the concert only solidified its reputation, and an earlier CD release derived from the LP master was a choice entry in the Goodman catalog for more than ten years.

Notes

Columbia logo on front of box set.

NOTE: this version is *not* Auto-coupled - LP1 labeled "Volume I" and contains sides A and B; LP 2 labeled Volume II and contains sides C and D. Compare to earlier "auto coupled" release LP Benny Goodman - The Famous 1938 Carnegie Hall Jazz Concert.

Title of track A3 was changed form "Dixieland One-Step" to "Sensation Rag".

Track B3 is erroneously credited to Billy Rose on label - should be Vincent Rose.

"I Got Rhythm" was moved from the end of Side B [B5] to the beginning of Side C [C1], compared to original LP release.

Track C6 - Jacket and label use "Schon" spelling rather than "Schön".

Cardboard inner sleeves contain continuation of original liner notes on one side and are blank on the other side.
