In January 2000, in response to a panelist's "Where does the number 42 come from?" on the radio show "Book Club", Adams explained that he was "on his way to work one morning, whilst still writing the scene, and was thinking about what the actual answer should be. He eventually decided that it should be something that made no sense whatsoever – a number, and a mundane one at that. They note, in particular, that Alice's attempt at her times tables (chapter two of Alice's Adventures in Wonderland) breaks down at 4 x 13 answered in base 42, which virtually reverses the failure of 'the Question' ("What do you get if you multiply six by nine?"), in that the latter would equal "42". if calculated in base 13.

The influence of media is growing stronger and stronger as time passes. Because of this, the competition among producers and advertisers gets tougher as they try to come up with new ways to catch peoples attention through their newspapers, magazines, movies, shows, and commercials. If you have noticed, the speed at which news travels around the world has become faster with the development and advancement in technology. Everything is evolving depending on the demand of people. The effect of media does not stop when the movie or program ends. And this lingering effect might just be the cause of behavioral changes in people. With action films, children tend to emulate the movie hero, engaging him to violent acts thinking that it is acceptable because his hero became successful in the end. With cartoon programs, not everything is good-natured.

People have been speculating about this question forever. But on the other hand, Shakespeare has Juliet say, "What's in a name? A rose by any other name would smell as sweet. These arguments have gone back and forth for thousands of years. And just to get us in agreement about how different this is from the way we do it, I want you all to close your eyes for a second and point southeast. Keep your eyes closed. OK, so you can open your eyes. I see you guys pointing there, there, there, there, there. I don't know which way it is myself -.

One way to answer this question is to teach people new ways of talking and see if that changes the way they think. In our lab, we've taught English speakers different ways of talking about time. Does treating chairs as masculine and beds as feminine in the grammar make Russian speakers think of chairs as being more like men and beds as more like women in some way? It turns out that it does.

The idea was popularised by Whorf but then came under criticism.

Television, movies and the media may also encourage people to spend money, become promiscuous and take drugs and alcohol to fit in socially. Images used in entertainment can provide graphic, sexualized and negative representations of what life is like and what is considered acceptable  . The mass media delivers a message to a wide audience and also has the ability to target specific groups of people.
