Byrd's first regular group was a quintet that he co-led from 1958 to 1961 with baritone saxophonist Pepper Adams, an ensemble whose hard-driving performances are captured "live" on At the Half Note Cafe. Byrd's 1961 LP Royal Flush marked the Blue Note debut of Hancock, who came to further attention with Byrd's successful 1962 album Free Form, and these albums also featured the first recordings of Hancock's original compositions  . Stepping into Tomorrow (Blue Note, 1975). Places and Spaces (Blue Note, 1976).

It's only one in a line of many magnetic '70s sessions led by Fonce and Larry Mizell, and it differs from their two previous Donald Byrd dates - the polarizing and groundbreaking Black Byrd and the deceptively excellent Street Lady - by not featuring any of Roger Glenn's flute, and by focusing on heavily melodic and laid-back arrangements.

Stepping Into Tomorrow, as well as the others listed, has a blended, smooth, layered sound. A sound with texture. The same "type" sound you'd hear when you listen to the 70s music of Roy Ayers, Marvin Gaye, Curtis Mayfied or Isaac Hayes. I was only 14-years-old at the time and, I loved Donald Byrd then, and now. At age 43, Byrd definately stepped into tomorrow with this album because it sounds just as good today as it did then. The sax's and Byrd's trumpet have some of the most soothing, melodic tones you'd ever want to hear. The vocals are also excellent.
