Written by Robert Munsch. Illustrated by Michael Martchenko. Published by Scholastic Canada, 2003. In November of 1984, I was on a tour of the Canadian High Arctic sponsored by the Canadian Children’s Book Centre and the Canada Council for the Arts. It was a very long trip. see MOIRA’S BIRTHDAY for a description of the trip. On the last day I was telling stories at the Dene Reserve across the river from Hay River on Great Slave Lake. Frederick is really good. He sends me a whole CD of wonderful pictures which I give to Michael Martchenko. All the buildings and backgrounds in the book are taken from his photos, as well as 6 year old Tina. Tina calls me on the phone.

Michael Martchenko is a Canadian illustrator and author. He is mostly known for his collaboration with an author Robert Munsch whose humorous stories for children he has illustrated. Martchenko has also authored several own books. It was during this period when the illustrator came into view of Annick Press representatives and author Robert Munsch who saw his work at a graphic-arts exhibition. Martchenko was displaying a scene in a park featuring pigeons with the landing gear. The illustrator’s zany humor – and extremely quick working pace – appealed to Munsch and to his publishers, and Martchenko began a new career. The first Munsch’s book illustrated by Martchenko, ‘The Paper Bag Princess’, was published in 1980.

Munsch at his creative best! His art of story writing, combined with the talented and complementary illustrations of Michael Martchenko, makes Show and Tell a must have for all children’s libraries. Munsch's inspiration for the story was two children who lived down the street. His story begins with a child named Benjamin, who wants to take something to school for show and tell. Martchenko's illustrations brilliantly capture the characters' reactions throughout the story. His last illustration will challenge all Munsch fans to pick out characters from previous stories. This is an excellent book for reading and even better for reading aloud. It would also make a great gift for any Primary teacher.

Illustrated by Michael Martchenko. Andrew’s old pyjamas were full of holes, so his father took him to get new ones. It was not until 1990 that Martchenko first authored and illustrated his own book, Birdfeeder Banquet. His second self-authored and illustrated book, Ma, I’m a Farmer, was published in 2003 Books Illustrated by Michael Martchenko

While Robert Munsch was in Hay River, Northwest Territories, in 2004, he decided to visit Fort Resolution, a 270-kilometre drive along a mostly dirt road. A man in Hay River lent Munsch his four-wheel-drive truck for the trip. When he returned it, the man's daughter Ciara was just back from playing hockey across town.
